The recorder consort repertoire in the 15th and 16th centuries is mainly vocal. Nevertheless there are some exquisite collections of instrumental pieces that were performed with a recorder consort, for example, Capricci in Musica a tre voci by Vicenzo Ruffo (Milano, 1564), Ving et sept chansons by Pierre Attaignant (Paris, 1533; the only source that explicity mentions the use of a recorder consort) and Fantasie Recercari Contrapunti a tre voci (Venice, 1559). The repertoire also includes several dances and other instrumental genres (Fantasies, Browninges, In Nominees), especially from England, and written in manuscript.
